KANSAS CITY, MO. -- James R. Mueller, national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, has announced the presentation of a
Diamond Jubilee Award citation to VFW Post 2015 in Lakeport. The Post will celebrate its 75th anniversary on February 6.
"This is a very significant milestone for a VFW Post," Mueller said in announcing the award. "This Diamond Jubilee Award recognizes dedication, determination, hard work and a lot or patriotism. And it recognizes 75 years of serving the needs of local veterans and their families; and 75 years of service to the local community, and 75 years of contributing to the strength, power and influence of our national organization. In presenting this award, I send my sincere thanks and appreciation to the members of VFW Post 2015.
There are 2.4 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliaries located in approximately 9,000 Posts world-wide. The VFW, founded in 1889, assists all veterans and their families in obtaining veterans entitlements and other services. In addition, the organization works for the well being of those serving on active duty, in the National Guard and the Reserve.
History of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars
This year the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) celebrates 106 years of tradition, community service and veterans’ service.
In 1899, the American Veterans of Foreign Service (Columbus, Ohio) and the National Society of the Army of the Philippines
(Denver, Colorado) were organized independent of each other to secure rights and benefits for veterans of the Spanish
American War (1898) and the Philippines War (1899-1902). The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States came into
existence when these two organizations; sharing similar ideals and requirements for membership, merged in 1914.
The VFW was chartered by Congress in 1936 and continues its rich tradition in enhancing the lives of millions through its community service programs and special projects.
The VFW, with its Auxiliaries, includes 2.6 million members in approximately 9,000 Posts worldwide. Our accomplishments are many, including lobbying for a GI bill for the 20th century; donating more than $1 million each to the Vietnam, Korean, Women in the Service and World War II memorials; fighting for compensation to veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome; and improving VA medical centers services for women veterans.
Annually, VFW members and its Ladies Auxiliary contribute more than 13 million hours of volunteerism in the community, including participation in Make a Difference Day and National Volunteer Week.
From providing $2.5 million in college scholarships to high school students every year, providing free phone cards to our nation's active-duty military personnel, raising money for the World War II memorial, to encouraging elevation of the Veterans Administration to the president's cabinet, the VFW is there--honoring the dead by helping the living.
